Witterings minibus celebrates 40 years

FORTY years of community service is being celebrated in East Wittering.

The West Manhood Venturers minibus service was launched on May 1, 1973, with the purchase of the first bus.

The current minibus is the fourth and serves all of the west Manhood Peninsula.

This year’s spring supper, held on Saturday in East Wittering Village Hall, celebrated the 40th anniversary.

Originally, running costs were met by membership charges and by grants from the county and district councils.

Costs now are funded by membership charges and fundraising events.

There have been donations from West Wittering, East Wittering and Bracklesham parish councils. The entire operation is run by volunteers.

There have been around 100 members for most of the forty years.

The drivers, mainly retired men, enable a large number of trips to the shops, clubs and societies, the service said.

The group, from Genesis Orwell Mencap, jumped 13,000 feet from a plane during a sponsored tandem skydive.

Ten employees from the charity, including new recruit Stacie Chenery, took on the skydive at Beccles Airfield – raising £3,000 towards a new minibus.

Stacie, 22, is an administration apprenticeship who has been with Genesis less than a month.

She said: “It was amazing, especially the free fall, and I wasn’t nervous at all.

“In fact, we all enjoyed it so much we’ve decided to do it again next year to try and raise even more money.”

Over the past few months, Genesis Orwell Mencap staff and clients have been busy raising funds towards the minibus, including holding car washes and raffles. The charity’s suppliers – including Genesis PR, Digtital Copier Systems, Essex Kilns and Hafele UK Ltd – have also made donations.

Stories like these show how important minibuses are to communities across the country. There are always people helping to raise money for new minibuses to help charities and other organisations. Keep checking back for the latest minibus news.
